Buyer intelligence
Play-of-color is a major quality driver. Pattern, body color and transparency must be judged by opal type; exceptional stones often do not conform to standard shapes or linear per-carat pricing.
Care
More vulnerable to scratches, chips, heat and dehydration than many gems. Warm soapy water is the safest routine method.
